BUCYRUS — A conversation between a local business owner and Crawford County Sheriff Scott Kent led to a donation of thermometers.

Kurt Fankhauser of Wavelinc Communications purchased 20 infrared no-contact thermometers and donated them Monday to the Crawford County Emergency Management Agency for first responders.

“I had talked to the sheriff recently and he told me they were in need of some no-contact thermometers at the jail and he had no luck in locating any that were in stock to order,” Fankhauser said.

After doing some research, Fankhauser was able to order the thermometers.

“I wanted to donate them so that any first responders who need to use them will have them available,” said Fankhauser, who opened Wavelinc Communications in 2004 at the age of 17. He employs three people and provides internet service throughout Crawford County and some parts of adjoining counties.

Kent said the thermometers are needed.

“The ones we are using now are used on the temple of the person and we really need no-contact thermometers to keep people safe,” Kent said. “I just want to ensure the safety of my staff, the inmates and the public throughout this pandemic.”

He said there currently are no reported cases of COVID-19 at the Crawford County Justice Center.

Kirk Williamson, director of the Crawford County Emergency Management Agency, said he appreciates the donation from Fankhauser to the county to support local first responders.

“The county has been getting overwhelming support of donations from the community throughout this pandemic,” Williamson said.
