The Bucyrus City Schools’ Food Service Department is excited to announce the annual Future Chef Competition at the Bucyrus Elementary School. The competition, which is aimed at educating kids about healthy eating habits, is open to any Bucyrus students in third, fourth or fifth grade.
Bucyrus students interested in participating in the competition must fill out and return the recipe entry form, found in the elementary school office, to their teachers no later than Jan. 22, to be considered eligible. Once all recipe submissions have been received, five finalists will be selected and invited to participate in a culinary competition “Cook-Off” March 10 at the Bucyrus Secondary School.
During this head-to-head competition, student chefs will prepare their favorite healthy sandwich for a distinguished panel of judges. Ingredients will be provided by the school and judging will be based on the following criteria:
- Originality
- Kid Friendly
- Ease of Preparation
- Best Use of Featured Ingredients
- Healthy Attributes
- Plate Presentation
“Too often we hear about obesity in kids, and kids not making the right choices in terms of their eating habits,” Food Service General Manager Lorie Pennington said. “Our hope is that this fun and educational competition will help change that, while encouraging students to get excited about healthy eating habits at a relatively young age.”
