On a cold, snowy day in February, history came alive at the Bucyrus Secondary School. Ninety-four Bucyrus eighth grade students had the opportunity to experience a small piece of American History thanks to Mark Cory, a local American Revolutionary War re-enactor.
Mr. Cory dressed the part, wearing a replica uniform of a solider in the Continental Army serving under General George Washington. He spent his time with the students teaching them many interesting facts about the war.
“Students learned that the American Patriots fought in 75 battles during the war, but only won 12 of those battles,” 8th grade history teacher Bev Milheim said. “Plus, as part of the learning experience, Mr. Cory demonstrated the procedure for loading and firing a musket.”
Students also learned that one battle of the American Revolution was fought in Crawford County, and that Colonel Crawford was with General Washington when they crossed the Delaware River during the Battle of Trenton.
“Mr. Cory is a 1973 graduate of Bucyrus High School, and we appreciate his willingness to participate in this activity for our students,” Milheim said. “He spent thirty-five years educating students about American History and has been re-enacting the American Revolutionary War since 1990. He is a true asset to the educational community in our county, and we appreciate his willingness to spend time with our students.”
