Bucyrus High School sophomore Erika Alspach has a passion for service to her classmates and community. That passion came out in her Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) project, “Educate, Learn and Achieve Traffic Safety”, which Alspach received a Gold rating for during the FCCLA Regional competition at Lorain County Community College.
Alspach’s project was designed to create awareness for traffic safety, specifically the dangers of texting and driving, throughout the Bucyrus Secondary School. She had her classmates take surveys and sign a “Not to Text” pledge.
“This is a great accomplishment for Erika,” FCCLA Adviser Vickie Purvis said. “She is an active member of FCCLA and has attended the FCCLA Leadership Conference in Marengo, as well as the FCCLA Regional Meeting at Ashland University.”
In addition to her regional accomplishment, Erika has also spearheaded projects to raise money for the Honor Flight for Veterans program and assisted the Bucyrus Lions Club with their annual barbeque chicken dinner.
“We are very proud of Erika for not just her accomplishments, but also her giving spirit,” Secondary School Principal Dr. Mark Burke said. “We hope the younger students in our building will see Erika’s commitment to serving others and strive to do the same.”
