Twenty years ago, Sandra Stone had no idea that a conversation with two of her sons’ teachers would lead to serving the children of her community for nearly half of her adult life. Thursday night Stone’s name was called for the final time during the roll call for the Bucyrus City School District’s Board of Education.
Stone credited teachers Marianne Wensinger and Sandra Shields for suggesting she run for a seat on the school board. “I had no clue I would be serving the district 20 years later,” Stone said in a story posted on the school’s Web site.
Bucyrus Superintendent Kevin Kimmel thanked Stone for her 20 years of service to the district and noted her decisions were always based on what she believed was best for the students of the district. (see Editor’s note below)
Black is one of the school colors at Bucyrus and Thursday night at the board meeting it also served as a way for staff members to show their displeasure regarding contract negotiations. Members of the Bucyrus Education Association appeared at the meeting wearing black.
Instrumental music teacher Mark Fiske explained.
“We have a contract that doubles the amount that we’re paying for insurance,” Fiske said. “You know that’s kind of hard on everybody and so that wasn’t approved and we are working on getting another contract approved that is more fair.”
Principal Mark Burke noted the Reindeer Games begin at the school today as a way a way to promote school spirit and teamwork among students.
“Reindeer Games are events put together by our Student Councils. Mrs. Orians, our Middle School Student Council Advisor and Mr. Schuster, our High School Student Council Advisor, have put together little games for kids to compete for spirit points,” Burke said. “At end of the year, the class, the Junior class, the Senior class, whoever has the most points can get a little reward at the end of the year. It helps to promote school spirit; it’s just a fun event for kids to get involved in. It promotes teamwork; it’s just a good event.”
It may be a good event in Burke’s opinion, but he also pointed out that he may suffer a bit of a personal setback because of it. The principal admitted he may be sore from the tug=-of-war that is included in the games along with ping pong games.
