The regular meeting of the Bucyrus City School District’s Board of Education was a lively one on Thursday evening.
Following committee and administrative reports, the board approved a lengthy list of personnel and business agenda items. Included in the list of approvals was the district’s participation in year two of the Ohio Art Council’s TeachArtsOhio initiative during the 2017-2018 school year.
“Our students and staff had a tremendously positive experience with the resident artists from the Ohio Arts Council,” said Superintendent Kevin Kimmel. “We are grateful for the opportunity that Donna Collins, the council’s Executive Director, has offered our students for the 2017-2018 school year.”
The board then moved to the discussion portion of the agenda, where they approved the handbooks for the Secondary and Elementary Schools, the Preschool Program and the annual High School Band Camp trip.
The board also approved the district’s investment in the “Community Opportunity,” which is being organized by the Crawford: 20/20 Vision and The Crawford County Partnership for Education and Economic Development. The goal of the initiative is to support Crawford County’s education system, businesses, and serve as a talent acquisition measure to help improve enrollment, job fulfillment, and increase population.
“I am a strong advocate for this project,” said Kimmel. “The Partnership has been instrumental in supporting our WAGE program and the funding and implementation of the Leader in Me. I am excited to see the positive impact the Partnership’s ‘Community Opportunity’ has on Bucyrus and Crawford County.”
The board did hold off on raising lunch prices from $2.85 to $2.95. The increase will have to be implemented eventually when the district is audited, but the board members felt it best to have another year for the families of students to prepare.
The board moved in to Executive Session with no additional action being taken. The next regular meeting of the Bucyrus City School District Board of Education will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Lincoln Administrative Center Thursday, July 27.
