The Board of Education for the Bucyrus City School District met Thursday with an eye towards the future academic endeavors of its students. Among the items discussed was the College Credit Plus Program and the opportunities it provides for high school students to get a head start.
Secondary School Principal Dr. Mark Burke explained.
“Tonight we spoke about the College Credit Plus Program. That is bringing college coursework to our students through a variety of ways. We have agreements with Marion OSU, North Central State College and Marion Tech for pathways for our students to take college credit through their campuses,” Burke said. “We have right now over forty students that are eligible to take those courses and we’re very excited to see what courses we can provide to our students.”
The program allows students to earn college credit hours prior to high school graduation at no cost to the students or their families.
School board members also discussed House Bill 64 and money it would provide for education in the state.
Several district students were commended for their recent accomplishments including those elementary students who participated in the Future Chef Competition. Those students were at the board meeting in cooking hats and mocks.
Three Bucyrus High School students were recognized for taking the top three spots in the Bucyrus Rotary Club’s Annual Four-Way Test Speech Contest. Mark Music came in first and won $300 dollars for his speech on “Competition”.
The third commendation was for senior Autumn Schwartz who gave a Capstone presentation on binding a book and the work it takes to create a book. Her book entitled “Lovely Time of the Celestial Heart” was passed around for the Board of Education to see.
