BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—The Bucyrus Police Department has a new leader as Captain Jon Dorsey was officially sworn in on January 7, 2024, during a ceremony attended by Mayor Truka and family members. Dorsey, a veteran of law enforcement, has built a distinguished career in the field since starting in 1996 at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Originally from Stratton, Ohio, near Steubenville, Dorsey began his journey as a corrections officer before advancing to the role of Sergeant. In 2000, he transitioned to the Crawford County Child Support Enforcement Agency under the leadership of Wanda Sharrock. After a stint at the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, he joined the Bucyrus Police Department on August 19, 2002.

Dorsey progressed through the ranks, becoming a School Resource Officer at Bucyrus City Schools in 2013. He was promoted to Lieutenant in October 2015, mainly overseeing night shift operations. His recent promotion to Captain followed a rigorous selection process that included a written examination on law enforcement supervision and policies.

In his new role, Captain Dorsey will assume responsibilities similar to those of recently retired Captain Tom Walker.

“Captain Dorsey’s job duties will be very similar to former Captain Walker’s. He’ll be handling public relations, public records, the police auxiliary, police explorers, recruiting, and serving as the wellness coordinator for the department. It’s quite a lot on one person’s plate, but I’m confident Captain Dorsey can handle it,” Police Chief Neil Assenheimer said.

When not serving the Bucyrus community, Captain Dorsey is active in local schools as the weightlifting coordinator and head junior high football coach. He resides in Bucyrus with his wife, Samantha, and their three children.

Captain Dorsey is eager to bring his vision for a wellness program to fruition, focusing on both the physical and mental well-being of his fellow officers as they serve the community.
