BUCYRUS―The Bucyrus Police Department has added its third new officer in a matter of a few months.

Andrew Plummer joined the force earlier this month and one of his first assignments was to help patrol the Bratwurst Festival.

“Andrew had his indoctrination to the police department during the Bratwurst Festival. He got to meet a lot of people from the community,” said Bucyrus Police Chief Dave Koepke.

Plummer is a graduate of Cardington High School and the Police Academy through Delaware Career Center.

“I have always wanted to become an officer. I enjoy helping others so this is a good profession for me,” Plummer said.

The hiring of Plummer puts the department at 20 officers.

“We are allotted up to 22 officers by the city and hope to get to that number eventually,” said Koepke.

Koepke credits Bucyrus City Schools for helping the police department with staffing.

“They financed a police officer position when they added a second school resource officer,” said Koepke.

Currently, Officer Jo Stahl is the resource officer at Bucyrus Secondary School and James Mata is the new school resource officer for Bucyrus Elementary. According to Koepke, both officers work patrol when school is not in session and handle juvenile and other complaints at the schools during the school year.

Plummer said the citizens of Bucyrus are friendly.

“This is a very nice community and I am excited to be here,” said Plummer.

Plummer is the third officer sworn-in to the department since May. Daniel Rufner joined the force in April and Doug McDonald was hired earlier this summer.
