In order to raise awareness and shine the light on progress towards a cure Bucyrus Mayor Roger Moore has proclaimed May as Cystic Fibrosis Month.
Over ten million Americans are symptomless carriers of cystic fibrosis. 30,000 children and adults have the disease in the United States with 1,000 new cases diagnosed each year.
Cystic Fibrosis is a chronic disease and attacks the lungs and digestive system. The defective gene and its protein product clog the lungs and cause life-threatening lung infections. It also obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food. Physical symptoms include coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, poor growth, and salty skin.
In pursuit of the cure and to help one of Bucyrus’ own affected by the disease, the “Miracles for Micah” benefit will be held April 26, 2014 at Suburban Lanes in Bucyrus.
“I urge all citizens to support Miracles for Micah and join the drive to find a cure for cystic fibrosis,” Mayor Moore said.
Micah was a Safe Haven baby adopted by Teresa Spears. He was diagnosed as an infant and after having him only three weeks, Spears received the news. Her love and bond to Micah was already growing and she never turned back. He has had medical treatments including surgeries for the disease. Micah also wears a special vest to shake his body to help break up the excess mucus caused by cystic fibrosis.
Proceeds from the benefit will go directly to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
