BUCYRUS—Most Bucyrus residents recently received campaign advertisements riddled with malicious content that target two candidates running for office.
Bucyrus Mayor Jeff Reser told council: “We have not seen this level of hatred in Bucyrus ever and I hope we never see it again.”
Reser offered a famous quote from St. Augustine: “In essentials; Unity In non-essentials; Liberty In all things; Charity.”
“When we lose sight of these three ideals, especially charity, then we see how quickly, and I do mean quickly how things can turn sour in the community,” Reser said.
Reser told the council he is deeply troubled by these tactics.
Reser said he has reached out to the Crawford County Republican Party and the Central Committee, suggesting they officially denounce the behavior.
Reser asked the council to draft a statement to be issued to the community denouncing these tactics.
“We need to let the citizens of Bucyrus and beyond know that this behavior is not representative of the fine citizens of Bucyrus,” Reser said.
He asked the council to attach a statement thanking every candidate who is running for office for their willingness to serve in difficult times.
Law Director Brian Gernert suggested the letter be drafted and sent to local media. Councilman Kevin Myers suggested the letter be drafted to the Central Committee and copies supplied to the media.
Councilman Terry Spiegel suggested the letter also be sent to the Democratic Central Committee.
Council unanimously agreed to draft the letter.
