Captain Walker released the following statement:

On 1/22/2023, Bucyrus Police Department received a 9-1-1 transfer from Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, requesting officers respond to 515 Tiffin St. regarding a fight and an unresponsive male. When officers arrived, they met with the resident and caller, Rochelle Leonhardt.

Officers found a male, identified as Sean Cassaro (46yoa, Bucyrus), lying face-down in the driveway, unresponsive. Bucyrus Fire/EMS pronounced the victim dead at the scene, and the cause of death was unknown at that time.

Through the initial interview with the witness, officers discovered there had been a physical altercation between the victim and Thomas Brown (49, of Bucyrus) and that Brown had left the scene in his vehicle.

Officers, assisted by Crawford County Deputies, went to Brown’s house and contacted him there. Brown was eventually taken into investigative custody and was held at the Crawford County Justice Center as a person of interest.

On 1/23/23, Cassaro’s body was taken to the Lucas County Coroner for autopsy. The unofficial preliminary cause of death appears to be manual strangulation. Later in the day, Prosecutor Crall’s office officially charged Brown with Cassaro’s death.

Brown appeared in Crawford County Municipal Court, where he posted a bond of $50,000.

Currently, the Bucyrus Police Department is still investigating this case, as there is a great deal of evidence to be forensically examined.

Again, BPD asks the public for patience, as this is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information regarding this case should contact Detective Jamie Carver at the Bucyrus Police Department (419) 562-1006.
