BUCYRUS — Bucyrus City Schools did not need to search far to find its newest administrator for the 2019-20 school year.

Matt Makeever will continue his career in education at the only district he’s ever known, and he’s happy about that. Makeever was hired during a recent Bucyrus City Schools Board of Education meeting as the new Bucyrus High School associate principal.

“I was looking for an administrative position. I was really hoping to get to stay at Bucyrus,” Makeever said. “It really worked out for me.”

He replaces Kevin Fourman who became the high school principal at Crestline High School.

A 1997 graduate of Bucyrus High School, Makeever also received his first teaching job at Bucyrus when he was hired by former BCS Superintendent Kevin Kimmel.

“And I’ve been here ever since,” Makeever said.

Makeever said the learning curve for the job will be a challenge, but one he’s ready for.

“I’ve been at Bucyrus for 17 years, and taught math for a majority of that time,” Makeever said. “So, it’s been awhile since I was a rookie at something.”

Makeever said the biggest advantage is having had the students as players and students. He spent time on the football coaching staff in the past and now is entering his first season as head coach and taught eighth-grade math for the previous four years.

“From that alone, I already know the majority of the kids’ names,” Makeever said.

BCS Superintendent Matt Chrispin said Makeever’s experience with the same student population he’s known in his previous position will make for a welcomed smoother transition.

Chrispin said he is excited to see Makeever take over his new position.

“What made him stand out from the other candidates was his experience as a teacher leader,” Chrispin said. “He has a lot of experience leading adults as well as in the classroom and that’s a big part of what the associate position will be focused on.”

Bucyrus City Schools begin classes Aug. 21.
