Bucyrus Elementary School third grade student, and 2014 Bucyrus Future Chef winner, Madalyn Kimmel was selected as a regional winner in the 2014 Sodexo Future Chef competition. Kimmel’s recipe for a healthy sandwich was one of only seven selected in the Sodexo Mid-Atlantic region.

“This is an amazing honor and accomplishment for Madalyn,” Bucyrus Food Services Manager Lorie Pennington said. “This is the first time we (Bucyrus City Schools) have had a regional winner in this competition, and we are all very proud of Madalyn for her hard work.”

As a regional winner, Madalyn was surprised with a prize package during the regular Board of Education meeting April 25. The package included an Amazon Kindle Fire, a Kindle case, headphones, power charger and $100 Amazon gift card from Sodexo.

“Since it was a surprise, I was really excited,” Kimmel said. “I didn’t know what was going on, and then they handed me that (gift bag) and it was really good.”

Kimmel’s recipe was among 35 nationwide that was reviewed for selection as a national semi-finalist. Despite not being selected as a national semi-finalist, Madalyn is still happy with her achievement.

“I didn’t know I would make it that far because it was my first year of doing it (Future Chef),” Madalyn said. “I really enjoyed the experience of being able to get involved in making something and doing something that I enjoyed.”

“Our BES students and staff are very proud and congratulate Maddie for achieving regional recognition,” Elementary School Principal Todd Roll said. “Her culinary success is reflective of her dedicated academic performance and strong personal character. Maddie’s experience represents what exciting things can happen when our students take advantage of the extra-curricular opportunities our school offers.”
