BUCYRUS – Less than two hours after Bucyrus firefighters battled a house fire on Reid Street they were called out to another structure fire Monday evening in temperatures dipping below 20 degrees.
The call for a house fire at 619 W. Mary St., came in at approximately 11 p.m.
“We have two trucks and the ladder truck at this scene,” Capt. Steve Sargel said.
Life Support Team Ambulance also was at the scene, although no injuries were reported, as firefighters prepared to fight the fire that was smoldering in the attic area of the two-story home.
Krista Funk, who has lived in the upstairs apartment of the structure since August, said she thinks the fire is electrical.
“One of the fuses in the fuse box blew so I ran to Walmart and purchased all new ones,” Funk said. “When I put them in, number four sparked so I took them all out.”
Funk said she and her boyfriend, Jonathon Fletcher, took her children to the Holiday Inn Express to spend the night.
“I wasn’t going to put the fuses in with one sparking like that so I took the kids out there to stay, then came back to get their clothes for school tomorrow,” Funk said as she held her cat, Mama, in her arms wrapped in a blanket.
When Funk and Fletcher came back to the house, they noticed smoke coming from the roof area.
“There was a fire in the kitchen so we called the fire department. We got our cat and dog out,” Funk said.
Funk said no one lives in the downstairs apartment of the home.
Funk has four children that live with her and they are ages 15, 11, 10 and 30.
“We can stay with my older daughter at her house temporarily,” Funk said.
Sargel said he had not been able to assess the cause or cost of damage yet but will have more information at a later time.
