BUCYRUS— A house fire that began on a stovetop quickly spread to the other areas of a duplex house on West Mansfield Street early Tuesday morning.
According to the Bucyrus Fire Department, the fire began in the location of a stovetop burner with a faulty knob that had been on for several days then spread to the cabinets above the stove. The fire spread up the wall of the downstairs apartment and ended up in the attic area.
Firefighters were called to the scene at 306 W. Mansfield St., at 6:53 a.m. and did not return to the station until about 11:30 a.m. Engines one and two were at the scene along with the ladder tower truck, pick-up truck and squad. Portsmouth Ambulance was on standby at the scene and the Bucyrus Police Department handled traffic at Spring and Mansfield Streets while firefighters worked to contain the fire.
Two families live in the duplex, and everyone was able to get out of their apartments without injuries. No injuries were sustained by firefighters either.
The exact cause of the fire has not yet been officially determined and there was no estimated amount of damages listed on the report, although the house may be determined to be a total loss, according to the fire department.
According to property records, the duplex is a rental that is owned by Ronald Worchester.
