On October 10, the Bucyrus Elementary School issued a reading challenge to its students during the Reading Challenge Kickoff Assembly. The Right to Read Committee and Staff Singers entertained students with a fairy tale skit and songs prior to issuing this year’s reading challenge.
The challenge: read for enjoyment at home, record reading minutes daily and earn prizes for completing different reading levels. The Reading Challenge, which started Oct. 10 and ends April 30, 2015, is part of the school’s year-long program to celebrate and promote a love of reading.
“At BES, we are very proud of our readers and are working hard to create a love of reading,” Librarian Diane Kaple said. “We have one main prize, a yard sign, that we hope to see going up all over Bucyrus.”
The yard sign, which reads “A Bucyrus Elementary Redmen Reader Lives Here”, can be earned when a student has read for 1,000 minutes. Once the student has earned the sign, they will be given a sticker for each higher level they achieve to add to their yard sign.
“The Right to Read Committee has done a phenomenal job again this year putting together a terrific reading challenge program for our students,” Associate Principal Timothy Souder said. “We hope enjoying books and earning stickers becomes a fun family event, and we look forward to seeing the yard signs all over town.”
The Right to Read Committee issued one final challenge to the students involving Elementary Principal Todd Roll and Souder during the kickoff assembly. If the students read a total of 700,000 minutes during this year’s program, Roll and Souder will each dress as a princess complete with wig, tiara, makeup and a beautiful princess gown.
“Mr. Roll and Mr. Souder have been very supportive of our Right to Read program through the Principal’s Challenge,” Kaple said. “Last year, our students reached the Principal’s Challenge goal and taped them each to a column in the cafeteria. Our students are excited to meet and exceed this year’s goal, and see their principals dressed as princesses!”
