A Bucyrus police cruiser got into a minor fender bender early Tuesday morning.

At 12:39 am officers checked for a report of an intoxicated driver on North Sandusky Avenue near Perry Street. The suspect vehicle was stopped in the 1600 block of East Southern Avenue. The driver backed up, crashing into the police cruiser causing minor damage to both vehicles. Tonya Laferty, 42, was arrested for possession of drugs and tampering with evidence. She was taken to the Crawford County Justice Center to be held for a court appearance and her vehicle was towed from the scene.

Bucyrus Police Department Captain Joseph Greathouse reported that the damage to the cruiser was minor.

“The damage was very minor, and more of a scuff,” Greathouse said. “It was a low speed impact and most likely just needs buffed out.”

Greathouse noted that the police cruiser pulled behind the car in the parking lot with its headlights on, but not initiating the overhead lights on the cruiser. When the car began backing up the officer put a spotlight on the car to which the vehicle didn’t stop until coming into contact with the cruiser.

Passenger Raelyn Skelton, 37, was arrested for possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana paraphernalia. She was issued a minor misdemeanor citation for each charge and released with a court date.

OVI charges on Laferty are still pending.
