BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—Bucyrus City Schools has announced a groundbreaking initiative, becoming the first district in Ohio where all staff are credentialed to serve as career advisors. The program, developed in partnership with regional economic development organization Team NEO, aims to link classroom learning with local workforce needs and prepare every student for their future.
With praise from Lt. Governor Tressel, the district’s plan will ensure every staff member—from teachers to support personnel—receives training to become either a Career Connections Advisor or Career Connections Ambassador. The announcement was made by Superintendent Bob Britton during the district’s annual convocation.

“This is a long-term commitment to aligning education with opportunity,” Britton said, framing the initiative as part of the district’s “True North” commitment. “We want every student to see a future for themselves and to know that every adult in Bucyrus City Schools is prepared to help them get there.”
The program integrates professional development days to immerse educators in key regional industries, including manufacturing, technology, healthcare, liberal arts, and business. This hands-on approach provides staff with firsthand workforce insights to share directly with students.
Julie Szeltner, Director of Talent Engagement for Team NEO, highlighted the program’s innovative nature. “Bucyrus is setting a new standard for how schools can connect students to meaningful career pathways,” Szeltner said. “We are excited to partner with Bucyrus City Schools to train and certify staff members to serve as dedicated Career Advisors and Ambassadors.”
The initiative received a special endorsement from Lt. Governor Tressel, who shared his support in a video message. “One of my priorities as Lt. Governor is making sure Ohio has a skilled workforce,” he said. “By using your professional development days to learn about these industries…you’re building a bridge between our classrooms and the workplace, and that matters, not just for your students, but for the future of our entire state.”
Career readiness now begins as early as preschool in the district, with developmentally appropriate STEM education. By high school, students can earn industry-recognized credentials in fields like advanced manufacturing, preparing them for college, technical training, military service, or direct entry into the workforce.
The district’s collaborative efforts are supported by an array of local businesses, higher education institutions, and community organizations, including Timken, Stanley Black & Decker, Marion Technical College, and the Crawford County Chamber of Commerce, among others. These partnerships provide students with valuable opportunities for job shadowing, mentoring, and hands-on experiences.
The groundbreaking model was facilitated through the Mid-Ohio ESC Business Advisory Council, where Bucyrus City Schools is an active member, working alongside state and regional leaders to align education with the needs of the workforce.
