The Bucyrus area got good news recently when it was announced that the assets of Checkmate Boats had been purchased by Hustler Power Boats. The news got even better when the announcement indicated that Hustler Powerboats plans to begin production at the Bucyrus plant next month.
Hustler Powerboats is headquartered in Calverton, New York and is a subsidiary of Global Marine Power which made the announcement. Hustler Powerboats has been making high-performance offshore boats since 1979.
Checkmate was founded by Bill Combs and purchased in 2007 by Baja founder Doug Smith.
The release from Global Marine indicates Smith and other employees are expected to be retained and production could begin on Aug. 1.
