The Buckeye Central senior class will have the opportunity something that hasn’t been done in a long time at the school, go on a senior trip.

The Buckeye Central Board of Education approved the trip which has a two day itinerary taking the students to the American side of Niagara Falls and Cleveland May 17-18. During discussion of the proposed trip the board weighed the pros and cons of doing a class trip prior to approval. The students and parents will be responsible for paying for the trip, with no school fundraisers taking place in order to fund the excursion.

This will be the first senior class trip for Buckeye Central since the early 1980’s.

During his report to the board Superintendent Mark Robinson spoke on the state report cards that were released earlier in the day.

“We did okay as a district when looking at the grades, but terrible to say, but I don’t know what all they are evaluating,” Robinson told the board. “I need to go back review and research at how we got our grades, or how to improve in some areas. I will add that we do a lot of things with students that aren’t in the report cards.”

Robinson noted that the value-added portion looked good, but with the elementary receiving an F they will need to look at ways to improve.

Buckeye Central students will be getting an extra day off in October. With October 28 already being an early release day for the students, the Buckeye Central Board approved making the day a professional development day for the teachers, allowing the kids a day off.

In new business board member Beth Diesch reported that the farm land in the Conservation Reserve Program is no longer eligible to public entities to rent out. While a portion of the land that was renewed last year will still be able to be used for the remainder of the contract, the school will have to find a way to use the other parcel of land.

The Buckeye Central Board of Education approved all personnel items on the agenda including the hiring of Cindy Riley as speech and language therapist for the remainder of the school year.

The next Buckeye Central Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 13 at 8:30 p.m.
