NEW WASHINGTON, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW) — Buckeye Central High School recently hosted an unforgettable evening of recognition and celebration, combining the National Honor Society (NHS) induction ceremony with the prestigious Alumni Hall of Fame induction. The event began with a catered dinner, bringing together families, students, alumni, and community members in a spirit of pride and accomplishment. The night allowed the current best and brightest at Buckeye Central to witness and hear from the best and brightest alumni, creating a bridge of inspiration between generations.

The night’s first honorees were nine remarkable students inducted into the National Honor Society. Their academic achievements, leadership, service, and character embody the values that NHS represents. Each student serves as a shining example of the dedication and excellence fostered at Buckeye Central. These students are: Olivia Bishop, Isabel Brenneman, Kellen Burger, Lucas Cianflone, Ella Collene, Sophia Martin, Savannah Pace, Ava Presler, and Conner West.

Following the NHS ceremony, attention turned to the induction of the 2024 Alumni Hall of Fame honoree, Christine Standard (McCarthy), a 1983 graduate of Buckeye Central High School. Her induction celebrated a lifetime of achievement, service, and community leadership.

Christine Standard (McCarthy): A Life of Service and Leadership

Christine’s educational journey is marked by a commitment to lifelong learning. After graduating from Buckeye Central, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Communication Science Disorders (1992) and a Master of Science in Audiology (1994) from Western Illinois University. She furthered her education by earning a Doctorate of Audiology (AuD) from Central Michigan University in 2010. In addition, Christine is a Nationally Certified Dementia Practitioner, showcasing her dedication to serving diverse populations.

Christine also served her country with distinction. She joined the U.S. Army in 1987, serving two years on active duty before transitioning to the Illinois National Guard in 1989, where she served for six years. Notably, she became the first female sergeant in the Beardstown National Guard.

Professionally, Christine’s career has been defined by her expertise and entrepreneurial spirit. She worked for two years with a local audiologist, seven years with a local otolaryngologist, and one year at McDonough District Hospital before founding her own practice, Macomb Audiology, which she has operated for nearly 20 years. Her work has impacted countless individuals, improving their quality of life through better hearing.

Christine’s contributions extend far beyond her professional endeavors. She has served her community tirelessly, holding numerous leadership positions:

  • Over 20 years of service to local scouting programs, including involvement with the Philmont Staff Association.
  • Nine years on the YMCA Board, including six years on the executive board.
  • Nine years on the Macomb Chamber of Commerce Board.
  • Seven years on the McDonough District Hospital Foundation Board, including four as Chair.

Her dedication to service is also evident through her active involvement at Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she contributes to musical worship and other roles. Moreover, she has provided financial support to numerous charities and organizations in the Macomb, Illinois, area for over two decades.

Christine Standard (McCarthy) exemplifies the spirit of Buckeye Central High School. Her achievements and commitment to service reflect the values instilled by her alma mater and inspire future generations of students.

The evening concluded with heartfelt applause, reminding everyone in attendance of the power of education, service, and community.
