On Thursday, October 20th the Buckeye Central FFA traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana for the 89th National FFA Convention.  This gathering of FFA members is the largest gathering of students in the nation and is representative of the largest student organization in the world. The FFA boasts over 600,000 members nationwide and at the 89th National Convention a total of 64,000 student members, advisors, and guests were registered.

The chapter began its trip with a tour of The University of Findlay’s Animal Science Building where students learned of the many hands on learning activities that take place while studying Animal Science, Pre-Veterinary Studies, or Equestrian Sciences at The University of Findlay. From Findlay, the group then traveled to Kalida, Ohio where it toured the Unverferth Manufacturing plant. Students learned the engineering process from concept to field for the many products that Unverferth produces.

Once at in Indianapolis the students browsed through the FFA Career show that provided learning opportunities from agricultural companies as well as colleges from around the country. Thursday ended with the third general session where the students were entertained by the Stars over America award presentation that highlighted some of the best students in the FFA and their outstanding Supervised Agriculture Experiences.

Friday morning began with the fourth general session of the convention where students listened to Mr. Jason Brown. Brown is a former NFL offensive lineman who gave up a mega-million dollar NFL contract to start farming. Brown spoke of his experiences in the NFL as well as a beginning farmer. His message can be summarized as Brown stated, “Be humble and thankful to share your abilities and love to change another person’s life.”

A tour of DOW Agrosciences followed the fourth general session where students learned of the scientific process to get new agricultural chemicals, fertilizers, and seed traits to market. Most new products take approximately 13 years and 280 million dollars from concept to the market place.
