The Junior Fair Dairy Show turned into a Hudson family showdown Thursday morning at the Crawford County Fair.
“It’s fun. Both kids are very competitive,” said father Craig who gets to sport both the grand champion and reserve grand champion ribbons in his house. “They both have a competitive nature to them. They like bettering each other.”
Kyle Hudson earned the nod over his sister Kendra for the overall grand champion and walked out of the arena with a smile as bright as the ribbon he carried signifying the win. The 16-year-old gave a glimpse into the good-natured sibling rivalry.
“It’s always nice to beat my sister,” Kyle said. “She was on top for quite a while. It’s always nice to win for once.”
Kendra didn’t take settling second to her brother too hard. “It was a lot of fun.”
The older sister had plenty to smile about and reason to be gracious. She showed the top Holstein calf overall in the show as well as the top 2-year-old cow. But it was Kyle’s black-and-white Holstein that claimed the best of show award.
Showmanship winners were Taylor Lutz in the Senior Division, Shannon Crabtree for the Intermediate and Sydnee Corwin was the top Junior. That made two showmanship trophies in two days for Lutz.
“Actually it was kind of a surprise to me,” Lutz said about Thursday’s honor. “Yesterday I won in dairy beef. I was surprised I won the dairy as well.”
It may have been the District 9 Holstein Show that brought the biggest smile to Craig Hudson’s face however.
Good, good, yeah,” Craig said as his youngest, Cole, made his way into the arena in the opening class. “The little one, it’s his first time out. He just turned 5.”
