The Board of Education for the Galion City School District is back to full force after Brian Carson was appointed to fill that vacant seat Thursday.

Carson fills the seat vacated last month by Heath Watkins.

Carson was one of eight candidates who applied. A Galion resident and State Farm Insurance agent, Carson was a State Patrol trooper who served at the Bucyrus post. Carson has one child enrolled in the district and shared what he hoped to do as a board member.

“. . . help move the schools forward, make them excellent schools for our kids and I am looking forward to it, looking forward to serving,” Carson said.

Carson will serve until Dec. 31, 2015. An election will be held in November 2015 to fill the unexpired term of the seat until Dec. 31, 2017.

Student representative, Evan Huggins, introduced himself. Huggins is a senior who plays golf and basketball. He is involved with the National Honor Society and other various groups. He expressed positive feedback on the after-school tutorial program and informed the board that students are taking it on themselves to get involved which makes it a productive tool in education. Huggins said he has applied to four different colleges and although undecided at this point, he is thinking of going to medical school to study cardiology.

The board also discussed the new state testing assessment company of PARK. This allows 20 days for 1,000 students to take testing online therefore cutting testing time in half.

There will be a new purchase from Pro Vision, a company who sells video cameras to place into 10 busses. These will be leased for 60 months at $508 per month with a five-year warranty and an option to buy at the end of the lease. The cameras are expected to aid with discipline and traffic. There will be four cameras per bus that also includes a GPS to locate the bus at all times. If there was an incident, it will automatically be e-mailed to the school.
