MARION—Shane Hooper, 34, of Marion, has been indicted by a Marion Grand Jury on a 16-count indictment for kidnapping and violently assaulting a Marion woman.
Online records from Marion County Common Pleas Court reflect that Hooper was indicted Wednesday on four counts of kidnapping, all first-degree felonies; ten counts of felonious assault, all second-degree felonies; one count of strangulation, a second-degree felony; and one count of tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony.
According to the indictment, Hooper allegedly used a baseball bat and a belt with a chain and a padlock attached to it when he assaulted the woman. The incidents allegedly occurred between May 27 and June 3 of this year, according to the indictment. The strangulation incident allegedly occurred on June 3, according to court records.
In a Facebook post on June 10. Marion Police Chief Jay McDonald said:
“The victim in this case was beaten so severely, it was shocking to me even with 30 years of seeing bad things. I am extremely grateful she was rescued from the torture, as I believe she would have been killed without the intervention of law enforcement and others.”
The Marion City Police Department swiftly responded to a distress call on June 3, 2023, leading to the discovery of a severely injured 28-year-old woman in the 300 block of Silver Street. Preliminary investigations revealed that the assault occurred in Prospect, Ohio, specifically in the 6000 block of Smeltzer Road. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office promptly assumed control of the case. The victim was initially taken to Marion General Hospital for medical treatment and later transferred to Grant Hospital due to the extent of her injuries.
The identity of the victim has not yet been released.
According to online records maintained by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, Hooper was on parole at the time he allegedly kidnapped the woman.
He was released in May 2021. He was found guilty of one count of forgery, a fifth-degree felony, in September 2020 and sentenced to eleven months in prison.
Marion County Common Pleas Court Judge Warren T. Edwards will preside over the case.
