BUCYRUS — New offerings to the student body were topics of conversation at the Bucyrus Board of Education meeting Wednesday evening.

The board’s student representative, Kristen Vaughn, told the board the student body is excited for upcoming changes and additions in the second semester, which starts in the next week.

She said many students are looking forward to the addition of cyber security and IT classes soon to be provided at BHS through virtual learning courses.

Bucyrus High School Principal Dr. Mark Burke said the courses will be offered through the Cisco Academy by a teacher already employed by Bucyrus City Schools. A handout provided by Burk listed Introduction to Cybersecurity, Cybersecurity Essentials, NDG Linux Unhatched and NDG Linux Essentials as courses to be offered in the 2018-19 school year.

Four additional courses will be added for the 2019-20 school year.

Burke said if a student would choose to attend North Central State College trough the Crawford Success Center after high school to attain an associate degree in that field, that student would not need to retake those courses already completed at BHS.

“I think it’s important to show students the possibilities that are out there in this career field,” Burke said.

Continuing her report, Vaughn said students are looking forward to meeting the district’s new family and consumer science teacher, Jordan Studer. Studer is a graduate of Colonel Crawford High School and the Ohio State University.

FCS courses are provided through Pioneer Career and Technology Center, but the classes take place at BHS.

Changes also are coming to student entry to Redmen basketball games. Students in grades 6-12 will gain free entry to high school boys and girls home basketball games for the remainder of the current season if they pick up a ticket from the high school office.

The decision came after Vaughn addressed the board in December on ways to improve student involvement and school pride. She said the decision is a trial period and will be revisited after the season.

Also during the meeting, Bucyrus Elementary art teacher Matt Feck recognized student Paige Barnett for her artwork.

Barnett’s Christmas oil pastel design was selected to be the BCS staff Christmas card for the year.

Feck also said Barnett was chosen as student artist of the month and will appear in an art book in the spring after he submitted her into a national competition.
