BUCYRUS — After an extensive search of the Crawford County Landfill, a body was found.

A multi-hour search led to law enforcement officials from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Galion and Mount Gilead police departments and Crawford and Morrow county sheriffs’ offices finding the body of a male.

According to Crawford County Sheriff Scott Kent, the individual has not publicly been identified and was referred to by the coroner as John Doe. Kent said he did not have information on a family being informed.

Kent said tons of garbage was searched through and operations by Rumpke, the operating company of the landfill, had to be halted in the area of the search.

Kent said a formal information release will be made by the Mount Gilead Police Department.

In a press release, Jonathan Kissell, a spokesperson for Rumpke, said the scene officially was cleared at 6:45 p.m. after the company was made aware of the body’s discovery at 4:45 p.m.

“This is a sad and tragic day,” Rumpke safety manager Randy Broadbright said in the release. “Our thoughts and prayers are with anyone touched by this tragedy. We appreciate the dedication and commitment of all law enforcement involved in the search.”

Crawford County Commissioner Jenny Vermillion also sent out a release, asking for prayers for the family affected by the tragedy.

More information on the incident will be shared as it is made known to the Crawford County Now staff.
