GALION — Galion’s Board of Education heard from several student representatives Tuesday on some different clubs offered at the school.

The clubs represented were the chess club, fifth grade choir and the outdoor club.

Members from the outdoor club, Quentin Boles, Emma Boles, Elliot Gangwer and Landon Fairchild, talked about different parts of a bow, different knots they have learned how to tie and the competition they attended last year as a field trip for the club.

Members from the chess club, Will Rinehart, Jaelin Rhodes and Calix Wolfe, showed different moves they have learned to use when playing. The chess club received a grant to be able to purchase timers in order for the students to be able to play in a more professional manner.

Members of the fifth-grade choir who were present were Bianca Davis, Lizzie Ely, Logan Estep, Mel Heckert, Carly Kent, Autumn Miller and Jesse Zehendner. The students sang one of their songs for the board and talked about why they chose to join the choir.

Galion Superintendent Jim Grubbs handed out the Believe, Achieve, Succeed award to former Galion custodian Walt Mullins.

The award isn’t given out that often to maintain the importance of it.

Mullins was a custodian at Galion until he had to go on medical leave due to injury. Grubbs told a story about how Mullins learned that there was a student a who would bike five miles to school every day but had never learned how to fish.

On a Saturday morning, Mullins picked up this student and took him fishing- he cared so much about a student that he took time out of his day to teach this kid how to fish and have this experience that he never had before.
