NORTH ROBINSON — A former administrator brought an idea before the Colonel Crawford Board of Education during the board’s August meeting Monday evening.

Former Colonel Crawford Superintendent Ted Bruner, on behalf of the “Cabin Crew,” made the board aware of the group’s desire to add a third building to the Dapper Cabin grounds.

The Dapper Cabin is owned by the school district, but does not involve school funds, and volunteers, such as Bruner, assist in its operation and upkeep. Bruner said many things are accomplished with donations, grants and other volunteer work.

The cabin location also is home to a blacksmith shop.

A third building, according to Bruner, would provide a permanent location for tables and chairs, made from local ash trees, for students during their activities and other groups who request to use the space. The tables and chairs currently are housed in the blacksmith shop.

Bruner said many student-focused events take place at the location during the school year, including FFA meetings, blacksmithing demonstrations, students taking part in preparing and cooking food in pioneer-era fashion and many others.

Bruner said the group’s goal is for the building to be the same size as the blacksmith shop, and it would be the final building the group plans to ask for permission to build.

Superintendent Todd Martin said this was the first time the board had been presented with the idea, and board members would need time to look at the site and consider the possible benefits for the community.

He said he understands the reasoning behind the request, as the Cabin Crew is at the location every Tuesday and Thursday as weather permits.

Before the official meeting began, board members toured the school as the district’s open house was taking place. The tour including the recently resurfaced parking lots.
