GALION — The Northmor Local Schools Board of Education passed a resolution during its meeting Tuesday evening to allow the district to continue giving athletic passes.
A resolution was provided to the district by NEOLA, an education-based policy writing company, to allow the district to provide complimentary athletic passes to various individuals such as Golden Buckeye citizens, current and former school board members, district retirees, current municipal officials, current fire, police and safety officials and others.
The resolution says the passes are good for district-sponsored junior high and high school athletic events through the OHSAA.
Northmor Superintendent Chad Redmon said the resolution is needed for auditing purposes, since ticket sales are considered district monetary assets.
“Every school district that uses NEOLA, either has or will adopt a similar policy,” he said.
He said, though everyone does not qualify for a complimentary pass, there are student and family passes available for purchase.
Also during the meeting, Northmor resident Garry Pfleiderer addressed the board asking if they had any opinions on campus wear. Campus wear is a dress code used by public school districts to battle an abundance of dress code violations.
Various schools in the area, such as Galion and Crestline, use a version of campus wear. Some schools require certain clothing that must be school colors, while others simply have the requirement to wear a collared shirt every day.
Pfleiderer said he had heard different customers in his business complain about some students’ and teachers’ apparel.
Multiple board members said they had not heard any concerns until Tuesday’s meeting.
Redmon said a survey was conducted nearly a decade ago and the vote ended with a decision to not pursue campus wear.
“I have no desire to bring campus wear to the district at this time,” Redmon said. “I believe students have a right to express themselves through dress, but still follow the dress code.”
He added teachers are subject to the discretion of the administration if an outfit is deemed inappropriate.
The board’s next meeting is Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. in the district board office.
