Earlier this week members of the Bucyrus Little Theatre (BLT) and family of Helen Neff attended the dedication of a Tupelo tree in Picking Park located off the Square and adjacent to the D. Picking and Company in downtown Bucyrus.  The tree was dedicated in honor of Helen Picking Neff, a longtime supporter, director, and friend of the theatre. The Tupelo tree is native to Mississippi, and was selected because of its personal significance to Helen, who once taught drama at an all girls’ college in the state. The tree was professionally planted by the Wade and Gatton Nurseries of Bellville, Ohio.

“Helen has taught theatre basics to and has enriched the lives of many local individuals who have appeared on Bucyrus Little Theatre’s stage or who have worked behind the scenes,” according to Scott Painter, President of BLT.

The idea for this special tribute came about this Spring when the Bucyrus Little Theatre presented Once Upon A Mattress upon Helen’s 40th anniversary of directing the play for the BLT stage. Helen, who recently celebrated her ninety-ninth birthday, was unable to attend due to weather conditions. A certificate recognizing her significant contributions and achievements was accepted on her behalf by her step-son, Rob Neff, and his wife Mary Jo Allan.
