GALION, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—A big band swing concert to benefit the Roof Project for the historic Gill House will be held on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at the First United Church of Christ, located at 248 Harding Way West in Galion. The concert, presented by one of north central Ohio’s leading big bands, The Shawshank Big Band, will begin at 6:00 p.m. under the direction of Mr. Damian Boyd.

The historic Gill House, situated near the heart of Galion, was built by B. B. Gill, a prominent early 20th-century resident. Designed by noted Detroit architect Louis Kamper, the home is historically significant as one of Kamper’s last designs and has hosted notable figures such as Henry Ford and Thomas Edison. Currently undergoing renovation by Preserving Galion, Inc., the concert aims to raise funds for a major roof restoration project.

The Shawshank Big Band, directed by area trombonist Mr. Damian Boyd, specializes in music from the Swing Era. Comprising talented musicians from across north central Ohio, the band strives to keep this genre alive, using transcriptions to replicate the sound of famous big bands.

This concert is part of the music ministry of the First United Church of Christ, which hosts monthly concerts featuring The Shawshank Big Band. Proceeds from these events are shared between the band and a designated organization. “We hope to have a good crowd to hear some great music and to support a good cause,” said Brian Treisch, a member of the church’s band.

The concert will be held in the church sanctuary and is open to the public free of charge. A freewill donation is requested, with proceeds benefiting both The Shawshank Big Band and The Gill House Roof Project. Doors will open to the public at 5:30 p.m.
