Despite the clouds and rain that seemed to blanket much of the county Wednesday, Buckeye Central’s future became a little bit clearer with the hiring of four staff members.

The new emplyees’ list includes the new Athletic Director/Assistant Principal Kevin Vargyus. Vargyus said he looks forward to the challenge ahead of him.

“I have to learn before I can really change things, and I want to work with people to see what we can do better,” Vargyus said.  “And improve our strengths and you know fix what we need to, to be a better school.”

The Athletic Director/Assistant Principal position was created in April as a cost cutting measure following the retirement of Athletic Director Jan Bates, and the abolishment of the K-4 principal position held by Evadyne Troyer.

Vargyus who previously taught at Bedford High School, begins his duties officially on Aug. 1.

Juliet Thomas was introduced as the new guidance counselor for B.C. after her one-year contract was approved Wednesday night.

Upon introducing Thomas, Superintendent Tara Meyerink said, “We are very excited about Thomas’ background and what she brings to Buckeye. She fills a void that we haven’t had here in a while.”

Lucinda Ross and Jody Chaffee were both given one-year contracts Wednesday as well. Ross will serve as Intervention Specialist for the 2013-2014 school year, while Chaffee will handle K-6 music.

The next Buckeye Central Board of Education meeting will be at 7 p.m. on July 11 in the multi-purpose room.
