COLUMBUS — On Thursday and Friday, May 2-3, the Buckeye Central FFA attended the 91st Ohio FFA Convention at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus.

Thursday’s activities included proficiency award interviews for seniors Mason Stahl and Darren Wurm.

Stahl qualified for the Swine Production Placement proficiency award area for his work on Kalb Farms where he cared for nursery piglets and overall maintenance of the barns and grounds for the past two years.

Wurm qualified for the Specialty Animal Production proficiency award for his four-year project of raising alpacas, growing his herd, and marketing the fibers produced. After the interviews the official results of the top 4 competitors were announced at the 2nd Session of the convention.  Stahl’s 3rd place award and Wurm’s 2nd place award capped the night off!

Friday’s activities involved 12 FFA members attending the convention where they saw keynote speakers, Dr. Steve Brown the National FFA Advisor, Layni LeBlanc a National FFA Officer, and Kolesen McCoy the Ohio FFA President. The group also had the opportunity to go through the career show where many colleges, trade schools, and businesses were present for students to explore careers and college options in the field of agriculture.

Friday evening concluded with the awarding of the Ohio FFA State Degrees. The state degree is the highest award that the Ohio FFA Association can bestow upon its members. This year receiving the award was seniors Josh Gwirtz and Zach Hiler, and junior Savannah Barnette.
