Members of Ashland University’s Telego Center met with residents of the Buckeye Central School community Thursday evening to gauge what the public wants out of the future superintendent of the school district.

Dwight McElfresh, and Dr. Gene Linton spoke with staff members, followed by community members, asking both groups what they want from a superintendent, what challenges they hope that the superintendent addresses, as well as what qualities of the community the school district should point out that would make the school district a great place to work.

Linton explained the prevailing theme that was expressed.

“I think a lot of the things that we heard from both the staff and the public tonight was important for the person to be visible in the community and to talk to people, and I think that was the overriding thing that we heard from both groups.”

Other ideas brought before McElfresh, and Linton were that the superintendent be agriculturally minded, one who has been in the class room, and to appreciate the pride and friendliness in the community.

“I think that the new superintendent should be interested in the students as well as the community,” Charles Philbrick said to the Telego Center representatives.

Linton and McElfresh gave an update on the outline saying 13 applications have already been submitted for the position with the application deadline being April 14. Interviews will begin on April 21 with a tentative hire date of May 15. It is hoped the new superintendent’s first official day on the job will be Aug. 1.
