During Thursday’s Buckeye Central Board of Education meeting the board approved that the high school switch from full-year credit courses to semester credit courses.

The move to semester credit courses was passed unanimously along with four other high school proposals which included accepting revisions to the Senior Seminar Option, dual enrollment agreements with Tiffin University and Hocking College for 2014-2015, as well as adopting dual enrollment courses in calculus, Ohio history, and geography.

Buckeye Central Principal Jay Zeiter explained the benefits of semester credit courses.

“It gives our kids a lot more flexibility in courses that they want to take. For example a semester course may not match up exactly in the schedule for them, so they’ll be able to possibly will be able to get a few more options there,” Zeiter said. “It gives our kids the opportunity to earn more credits this way, and gives our kids that are thinking about Pioneer to get their credits in line before they head to Pioneer.”

The Buckeye Central Board also approved donations for the Outdoor Learning Center totaling $17,903: $10,000 will come from the GE Foundation, $5,000 will come from GE Bucyrus, and $2,903 will come from the North Central Electric People Fund.

While the school is still waiting on permits, plans are currently to have Studer-Obringer break ground this spring and to be up and running as an Outdoor Learning Center by next school year.

The Buckeye Central Board approved all items on the consent agenda including extending Zeiter’s contract as high school principal through June 30, 2015.

The next Buckeye Central Board of Education meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on May 15 in the Multipurpose Room.
