GALION—On Tuesday evening, the Northmor Local School District held both their organizational and regular board meetings.

Mr. Jeff Whisler will remain the board’s president, and Mr. Carlyle Smith will be the vice president. It was voted that the regular board meetings will remain on the third Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m.

In accordance with Ohio House Bill 409 that Governor DeWine signed into law on January 8 of this year, the requirements that need to be met in order for an individual to work as a substitute teacher in schools has changed.

One of the original requirements for anyone who wished to sub was to have a bachelor’s degree, whereas now you need either an associate degree or a minimum of forty-eight semester hours. This came about due to the high demand for subs and the lack in numbers of individuals qualified and certified to sub.

In the ongoing battle with Mohican Outdoor School (MOS), the district has filed a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office, with the PTO to follow suit soon.

Being that it would be illegal for the school to pay parents back to right the situation, it was questioned whether or not the PTO would be able to pay parents back, however, it was determined by the PTO’s legal counsel that they can’t pay the families either because it is not permissible based on their bylaws.

The PTO will be seeking in-kind donations and will be putting together a fundraiser to pay the families back who were shorted money by MOS. Overall, the amount that MOS owes the families of Northmor’s eighth-graders is 14,654 dollars. The maximum amount owed to a family is 290 dollars, depending on how much money students fundraised to offset costs for the trip.

Two anonymous individuals have each pledged 1,000 dollars towards the donations.
