The Alpha Recovery 12-Step Program received a boost Sunday morning as it was presented a check from the proceeds of the Concert on the Green at Woodlawn United Methodist Church.

Bill Denton was on hand to present the check to the recovery program totaling $12,720 from the BBQ benefit, which featured performances from the John Glenn High School Steel Band, United in Harmony, and an appearance from Don Cockroft, retired kicker/punter from the Cleveland Browns.

Pastor Margie and John Maddox were both on hand to receive the check for the program. Margie Maddox explained where the proceeds from the benefit will be used.

“We have the house for the rehabilitation of women (who are victims of) domestic violence, victims of crime, and homeless women,” Maddox said. “So the one building that is free, only one is up running the other two are in construction, so the proceeds from this benefit will help us get those ready and up by the fall.

“It’s not about being faith-based,” Maddox continued. “It’s about being a disciple of God.”

The event, which was spearheaded by Bill Denton, had over 70 volunteers from different denominations lending a helping hand. Denton said that seeing the groups work together was exciting.

“It was exciting to see the churches, regardless of denominations coming together, doing God’s work, making this a successful event,” Denton said.

The $12,720 eclipses last year’s Concert on the Green mark of $7,000 raised.

The Alpha Recovery program works with the jails and prisons working to help people recover from addictions. The program works to successfully integrate recovering individuals  into a new life of honesty and stability. With 27 chaplains working in the Bucyrus and surrounding area churches the Alpha Recovery program has a 50 percent recovery rate.
