BUCYRUS — A Facebook post by the son of a Bucyrus resident led to a reunion of sorts and to a new handrail for a former lunch lady.
Ruthie Lady Pollock worked at Bucyrus Middle School in the lunchroom for 39 years and still is known by many as one of the sweetest and most fun lunch ladies around.
“She was my kids’ lunch lady and mine,” Bucyrus resident Mike Davis said.
Davis saw a post by Lady’s son, well-known mask creator David Lady, on social media and immediately responded to it.
“Dave is my friend and he was asking if anyone knew of someone who could repair the handrail on his mom’s front porch. I told him I could do it and I had friends that could help,” Davis said.
He had just completed the vinyl wrapping of a work truck through his business, Moto Lenz Photography, for Integrity General Contracting owner Joey Alspach and called him to help on the project.
“Ruthie was my lunch lady too and of course I wanted to help,” Alspach said as he and his worker, Elden Mills, worked to install the new handrail. “I have always wanted to do something to give back to the community in some way and this seemed like a great opportunity to do that.”
Davis said he also power-washed Ruthie’s front porch and painted it a deep blue for her. Alspach said the paint was donated by Rick Jenkins at Sherwin-Williams in Bucyrus.
“We wanted to do all we could for her,” Davis said. “She was always so nice to the kids who came through her lunchroom for all of those years. I was a hellraiser and she still treated me with respect. She did not care what walk of life you came from, she treated everyone with dignity and respect.”
Ruthie said she is grateful for the help.
“They have done such a nice job. Everything looks great and it will be much safer for me,” she said as she stood in the doorway of her Bucyrus home with the help of her walker.
When asked her age, Ruthie replied with a laugh and the sense of humor she is well-known for.
“If the good Lord allows me to live until then, I will be 90 on Halloween,” she said. “Yes, my son and I were both born on Halloween, I live on Elm Street and my neighbor is Freddy Kruger.”
