BUCYRUS — Recognizing the achievements of others was a priority at Thursday evening’s Bucyrus City Schools Board of Education meeting.

Kimberly Miller-Smith attended the meeting to present the Friends of Public Education Recognition Award to a local bank who has shown support for the district.

Brad Murtiff, president and CEO of First Federal Community Bank, received the award on behalf of the bank, which was nominated by the board.

Miller-Smith said the bank was recognized for its support of the school community in ways such as sponsoring a new digital sign at the Bucyrus Secondary School and upgrades to the athletic complex.

She also said the bank was a large supporter of the financial literacy program at Bucyrus High School and Murtiff was a previous Bucyrus Board of Education president.

Also, in attendance was Bucyrus City Schools art teacher Matt Feck, who recognized four Bucyrus Elementary students whose artwork was chosen to be displayed in the hallway at the Bucyrus City Schools administrative offices.

Victoria Stang, Michaelee Williams, Lucas Bradwell and Makinsey Weiler all were recognized for their work with certificates presented by Feck on behalf of the district.

A check presentation to support the Bucyrus Backpack Program also occurred at the meeting.

Dave Smith, of Bucyrus Elks Lodge No. 156, presented a check for $3,500, as part of a Beacon Grant, to assist in covering costs for the program that focuses on sending meals for the weekend with students whose families are in need.

Board member Traci Wetterau said the program began with a $50,000 grant from Walmart, and due to the generosity of donations from groups like the Elks, the original principle has not been depleted.

The next Bucyrus board meeting is Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m.
