BUCYRUS, OH (CRAWFORD COUNTY NOW)—David Shepherd, a 32-year-old resident of Bucyrus currently held in the Crawford County Jail, made an appearance in the Crawford County Common Pleas Court on Monday.
Judge Sean Leuthold presided over the hearing where requests for a hearing in two motions filed by Shepherd’s attorney, Tom Nicholson, were discussed.
Nicholson’s motions seek to suppress any statements made by Shepherd to the police while in custody and to suppress evidence related to items seized in a search warrant.
The police had obtained a search warrant for Shepherd’s residence on South Sandusky Street based on information provided by the mother of the children.
The mother, who is currently incarcerated, informed the Bucyrus Police Department that Shepherd had confessed to sexually abusing her children through computer text messages.
During the search of Shepherd’s home, conducted with a battering ram after he did not respond to the door, Shepherd was found coming up the basement stairs. He was then taken to the kitchen for questioning after being read his Miranda rights, where he confessed to sexually abusing both children, involving digital and oral penetration. He also admitted to attempted vaginal and anal penetration on the nine-year-old.
Shepherd is now facing a total of nine counts of rape, each a first-degree felony, with the possibility of life in prison without parole if convicted on any single charge due to the young ages of the alleged victims.
The motion to suppress hearing is scheduled to take place on Thursday in the Crawford County Common Pleas Court, and Shepherd remains in jail on a one million dollar bond.
Crawford County Now will continue to provide updates on this ongoing case.
