With the passage of Thanksgiving that means Christmas season is in full swing and the Bucyrus Fire Department is looking for a few good souls to help spread the holiday cheer to those less fortunate.
The annual toy drive for the BFD will take place from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Dec. 12 at the Mansfield Street station. Like in years past the event will be a drive-thru drop off in which donors will drive through the back of the station, stop inside the station to drop off their donation of a new toy, and exit out the front of the station onto Mansfield Street.
Bucyrus Firefighter Greg Hershey explained that while they are accepting toys for all age groups for both boys and girls, one age group usually gets overlooked at the toy drive. Hershey noted that usually the older kids get left out on the donations.
“What we really lack are donations of toys for the older kids and teenagers; board games, books things of that nature,” Hershey said.
Hershey explained that the fire department will also be accepting monetary donations and that the money that is raised at the toy drive will go towards helping a few kids stay warm in the winter.
“We are looking at getting coats this year for older kids,” Hershey said. “Now we have 27 kids that need coats, and we are looking at getting good coats and that is going to run us $1,500 dollars.”
Hershey noted that the Fire Department will be trying to purchase durable winter coats that will last the kids for multiple winters.
