On Saturday, March 15, ten students from the Bucyrus Secondary School competed at the 2014 Marion Area District Science Fair. Eighteen additional schools also competed at the district event, which was held at the Alber Student Center, located on The Ohio State University at Marion’s campus.
Four of the ten Bucyrus students competing received “Superior” ratings during the event. The following is a list of these students:
• Bailey Plumley – 9th Grade
• Julia VanVoorhis – 9th Grade
• Reece Zeigler – 6th Grade
• Kade Slagle – 8th Grade
“These four students did a tremendous job preparing themselves for the district competition this year,” Bucyrus science teacher Amanda Kent said. “Four ‘Superior’ ratings from one district is a tremendous accomplishment and speaks very strongly to the strength of the students in the Bucyrus City Schools.”
Two of the four students received special recognition for their individual projects. Bailey Plumley received a special award for the “Best Biochemistry/Microbiology Project”, while Kade Slagle received an invitation to the BROADCOM National Science Fair.
In addition to their “Superior” rating, all four of these students have received invitations to compete against the best projects from the entire state on Saturday, May 10, at the Ohio State University in Columbus.
“We are very pleased with the performance of all ten students in this year’s district science fair,” Kent said. “Nine of the ten students competing made it past the first round, which means they were being considered for special awards. Overall, our students did a great job, and they are to be commended for their hard work and dedication.”
