A man who affected many aspects of the Bucyrus community from bowling to insurance and ice cream to pets has died. Eighty-five-year-old Harry Wells passed away Tuesday at Riverside Methodist Hospital as a result of complications from pneumonia.

Harry Wells PhotoWells was a long-time Bucyrus entrepreneur who began his business career at the age of 18 after graduating from Holmes-Liberty High School. Wells’ first venture into local business circles was the Smooth Cool Dairy Bar which he sold three years later.

Wells was co-founder of the Watts and Wells Insurance Agency and in 1963 became proprietor of two Crawford County bowling centers – Suburban and Gala Lanes. Wells was a co-founder and past champion of the Bill Rahm Invitational which remains an annual bowling event today. He also served the Humane Society of Crawford County as its executive director and was a member of that organization’s board of directors.

Calling hours for Wells will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Wise Funeral Services in Bucyrus, Funeral services for Wells will be held Saturday morning at Wise Funeral Services. A complete obituary can be found on the Obituary page on this Web site.
