On Feb. 28, the Bucyrus Elementary School presented its students with a school-wide reading challenge. This unique challenge – to “Read Aloud” 2,904 books or stories in just nine days – is based on children’s books about math written by author Greg Tang and marks the beginning of this year’s Right to Read Week, “The BEST of Times”.

Todd Roll and Timothy Souder, Elementary School Principal and Associate Principal, have issued a challenge to the students. If students reach the goal, each will be given a piece of tape to help duct tape the principals to a wall during a school assembly.

“Right to Read Week is a fun time for students to enjoy books and make reading fun,” said librarian Diane Kaple. “We hope this years’ challenge makes that possible.”

Deb Hoover, District Literacy Coach noted, “We hope our Right to Read Week activities will bring attention to the importance of parents reading with their children. We know that children who are read to when they are young are far more successful in school later on than those who do not have those experiences. Books open many doors for children.”

Students will have the opportunity to participate in an array of other special activities throughout the week. Events include the following:
• Monday, March 10 – Hat Day
• Tuesday, March 11 – Read a T-Shirt Day, Author Visit and Family Night from 6:00-8:30 p.m.
• Wednesday, March 12– Dress as a Book Character Day, Buddy Readers
• Thursday, March 13 – Crazy Sock Day, Guest Readers
• Friday, March 14 – Redmen Spirit Day & Redmen Readers
• March 10-14 – Spring Book Fair
