During the Colonel Crawford Board of Education meeting the Building and Grounds Committee reported that the school would be choosing Regency as the school’s owner-agent during the high school wing construction process.

During the Building and Grounds report, Norm Huber mentioned that two of the four firms were not prepared for their meeting with the committee, and that the fourth group was prepared, they didn’t represent that many local buildings.

Superintendent Todd Martin explained the role of the owner-agent.

“They are going to oversee all phases of the drawings, the schematic drawings,” Martin said. “They will be in contact with the Architect Fanning Howey to make sure everything is working every way it should, to make sure the plans tie in with the existing building to what they are putting on; whether it be the gas the HVAC, the plumbing, the electrical, they are going to look at all the facets to make sure it is a fit. ”

Martin drew out a timeline for construction on the new high school wing for Colonel Crawford which begins with meetings with the architect next week, breaks ground in the spring, with move in to the new building at worst case Christmas of 2015.

High School Principal Jake Bruner unveiled the curriculum for next school year to the board Monday night. During his report Bruner noted that to help ease the transition of some of the middle school to high school that they will be on the same nine-period bell schedule which will begin at 7:30 a.m. and dismissal at 2:49 p.m.

During his report, Bruner mentioned that the high school will offer a Phys. Ed. waiver for the first time, Bruner explained the waiver.

“Right now we require two physical education classes to graduate from Colonel Crawford,” Bruner said. “What we are going to do is to reduce that to one Colonel Crawford P.E. credit, then if a student participates in two full seasons of Colonel Crawford sports the second P.E. credit will be waived.”

Bruner explained to the Board of Education that with the P.E. credit waiver it could provide more opportunities for elective classes for students.

The Colonel Crawford Board of Education approved all items on the consent agenda including reading two policies Monday night.

The board approved the third and final reading on the open enrollment policy change. With the unanimous approval Colonel Crawford will now permit students from any school district to open enroll in their school system.

The Colonel Crawford Board also approved a first reading on the policy to define the capital assets threshold to $5,000 from $1,500.

The Colonel Crawford Board of Education approved to set March 28, April 17, and April 18 as make-up days due to this year’s winter. Also approved at the meeting was the usage of Blizzard Bags in case the school district needs to use future calamity days for the school year.

Students who participated in the County Spelling Bee were commended by the Board of Education Monday night. During last Thursday’s Spelling Bee Colonel Crawford swept the top three spots in the contest.
