While the graduation date may still be the same, Galion City School District seniors may have to wait a few days before they can officially sing “School’s Out.”

The Galion City School District Board of Education decided to keep the graduation date of Friday, May 30 after holding a public hearing on whether to keep the graduation date, or to move it one week back to Friday, June 6.

Due to missing now 13 days due to this winter’s conditions, the seniors are currently scheduled to make up two days and those in grades K-11 would have to make up five days.

The number of days to be made up could change as Ohio House will be voting on whether or not to allow for schools to have more calamity days. If approved currently the seniors would be in the clear to graduate without having to use make-up days. If not seniors could face the reality of attending class for two more days after graduation.

Galion Superintendent Mark Stefanik explained.

“We have had an extraordinarily high number of calamity days, so if the state extends it from 5 to 9 that takes up basically three quarters of the days that we have missed, and then we would be inside of the make-up days.”

“Because of the blizzard bag, and the reorganizing of the calendar, we have picked up enough days to where we could eliminate the need for the make-up days at the end of the school year,” Stefanik continued.

The House will vote on the calamity days issue on Feb. 12, prior to vote in the Senate.

The Galion School Board also approved contracts for Nicole Lambright, Sarah Baker, Erskine Braggs, and Stephanie Kiger at Thursday’s meeting.
