• BUCYRUS – A Bucyrus family is receiving assistance from the local chapter of the American Red Cross after a structure fire at their residence on Wednesday.

According to a report by the Bucyrus Fire Department, the renter of the home at 815 E. Rensselaer St., Truman Sandlin, was cooking when hot grease spilled onto the stove and ignited. The fire spread to a wall but was contained to the kitchen area.

The call came into the fire department at approximately 7 p.m. and they were assisted at the scene by Bucyrus Police.

The house is owned by Manzo Surgener and the amount of damage is estimated at around $2,500.

Surgener said repairs to the home are underway. The Red Cross assisted the family in securing a place to stay for the night or two  until the repairs are complete.
