MANSFIELD — According to a press release from the Shelby Police Department, a search continues for a Cleveland-area man and his 10-month-old child.
Information release by law enforcement was as follows:
Robert Beane was arrested by the U.S. Marshal Services in Elyria on June 28 on an armed robbery and kidnapping case out of Elyria. While incarcerated in the Lorain County Jail, he was released on a medical furlough and fled the hospital July 5.
At approximately 4 a.m. July 25, Beane stole a 2018 Camaro in Elyria. At around 5:30 a.m., he went to his girlfriend’s residence in Lorain. There, he pistol-whipped her and fled with their 10-month-old son.
Police responded, but the victim was not cooperative at the scene. Later, she gave additional information regarding the vehicle description and what had taken place.
This morning, the vehicle was believed to have been in Shelby. That information was confirmed by Shelby Police. As law enforcement officials from several agencies responded to attempt to locate and take Beane into custody, the vehicle had left Shelby and was observed heading toward Ashland on U.S. 42. The vehicle was observed by law enforcement near Baney Road and a pursuit was initiated. The pursuit was lengthy and was lost and picked up several times.
The pursuit resulted in a crash of the stolen vehicle and the suspect reportedly exited the vehicle with his 10-month-old and fled on foot.
The Richland County Sheriff’s Office has assumed command of a large manhunt that includes resources from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Mansfield Police Department, Ontario Police Department, United States Marshal’s Office, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Shelby Police Department, as well as support from local fire departments and rescue units.
